Treatment Options for Those Struggling with Heavy Periods
Treatment Options for Those Struggling with Heavy Periods
Heavy periods can be more than an inconvenience. When bleeding regularly interferes with work, sleep, exercise, relationships, or your normal routine, it may be time to talk with an OB/GYN about what is happening and what can be done.
At Buffalo OB/GYN, our all-female OBGYN practice provides care for women in Amherst, Buffalo, Williamsville, Clarence, NY, and surrounding communities. We understand that menstrual symptoms can look very different from one woman to another. That is why finding the right heavy period treatment starts with understanding your symptoms, medical history, possible underlying causes, and personal health goals.
When Is a Period Considered Heavy?
A heavier-than-usual cycle once in a while does not necessarily mean something is wrong. However, ongoing or excessive bleeding deserves attention.
Signs of heavy menstrual bleeding can include needing to change a pad or tampon every one to two hours, bleeding for more than seven days, waking during the night to change menstrual products, or feeling dizzy, faint, unusually tired, or short of breath. Heavy menstrual bleeding can sometimes contribute to anemia.
If your periods have changed or are making it difficult to participate in everyday activities, an evaluation can help determine what may be causing the bleeding.
Why Heavy Period Treatment Is Different for Every Woman
There is no single treatment that is right for everyone. The best approach depends on factors such as the cause of the bleeding, your age and medical history, how severe your symptoms are, whether you need contraception, and whether future pregnancy is part of your plans.
Heavy bleeding may be related to hormonal changes, fibroids, problems with ovulation, thyroid conditions, PCOS, endometriosis, bleeding disorders, or other gynecologic concerns. That's why it is important to identify the source of symptoms so treatment can be tailored to the individual rather than simply addressing the bleeding itself.
Women experiencing irregular cycles, pelvic pain, or other symptoms may also benefit from learning more about our PCOS and Endometriosis care. Both conditions can affect menstrual cycles, and their treatment may vary depending on symptoms, severity, and future pregnancy goals.
Common Heavy Period Treatment Options
Once the possible cause of heavy bleeding has been evaluated, your provider can discuss which treatment options may be appropriate for you.
Hormonal Birth Control
Certain hormonal birth control methods may be used to help control heavy or irregular bleeding, particularly when problems with ovulation, PCOS, or fibroids are contributing to symptoms. Options can include birth control pills and other hormonal methods.
Hormonal IUDs
For some patients, a hormonal intrauterine device, or IUD, may help make menstrual bleeding lighter. Whether an IUD is appropriate depends on your individual health history, symptoms, contraceptive needs, and goals.
Non-Hormonal Medications
Prescription tranexamic acid is another treatment that may be used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. Certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, commonly known as NSAIDs, may also help reduce bleeding while relieving menstrual cramps for some patients. These medications are not appropriate for everyone, so treatment should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Treatment for an Underlying Condition
Sometimes the most effective way to address heavy periods is to treat the condition contributing to them. For example, women with PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, hormonal problems, or another menstrual disorder may need a treatment plan centered on that diagnosis.
Our Menstrual Disorders page provides more information about abnormal bleeding, irregular cycles, cramping, and other menstrual concerns evaluated at Buffalo OB/GYN.
Minimally Invasive Procedures or Surgery
When medication is not effective or when a structural condition such as fibroids or polyps is involved, some women may be candidates for a procedure or surgery. Options can vary significantly based on the diagnosis and whether future pregnancy is desired. For example, endometrial ablation may reduce or stop menstrual bleeding but has important implications for future pregnancy. Other procedures may be considered when fibroids or another uterine condition are causing symptoms.
Finding the Right Treatment Starts With an Evaluation
You should not have to plan your life around an unpredictable or unusually heavy period. An evaluation gives you an opportunity to discuss how much you are bleeding, how long your periods last, other symptoms you may be experiencing, and how your cycle is affecting your daily life.
Depending on your symptoms, evaluation may include a review of your menstrual and medical history, an exam, blood testing, or imaging such as an ultrasound. The goal is to better understand what is contributing to the bleeding before deciding on a treatment plan.
At Buffalo OB/GYN, our all-female OBGYN practice takes an individualized approach to care. Whether your heavy periods are related to hormonal changes, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, or another menstrual disorder, our team can help you better understand your options and determine the next appropriate step based on your needs and lifestyle.
